Vacancy Announcement for “Project Assistant and Communications Officer” Position

Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Flight & Migration Competence Center in Addis Ababa (FMCC) invites adequately qualified and motivated applicants to apply for the position of a Project Assistant and Communications Officer.  

About FES-FMCC

Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) is a non-profit German foundation funded by the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany and headquartered in Bonn and Berlin. FES is promoting the values of Social Democracy together with partners around the world. On the African continent, FES has been working for social justice, democracy, peace and international solidarity for over 40 years. It has encouraged and nurtured political exchange between Africa, Germany and Europe for many years, acting as partner to political parties, parliaments, trade unions, media, civil society groups and the interested public.

The FES Flight & Migration Competence Center in Addis Ababa (FES-FMCC) was established in 2019 as a regional office to promote migration policy debates within Africa as well as deepen the migration dialogue between Europe and Africa. It is further devoted to the study of international migration trends with particular emphasis on South-South migration and the migration-development nexus. Besides producing evidence-based, policy-relevant research, FMCC engages different stakeholders in all aspects of migration within Africa and beyond.

Job Summary

Project Assistant

The Project Assistant and Communications Officer should have a great interest in event management, i.e. preparation and organization of events with FES-FMCC partners and external service providers. The candidate shall provide professional, friendly and polite service to participants of events and service providers selected by FES-FMCC and should manage the administrative and logistical parts of our activities in a smooth and efficient manner. Our new Project Assistant should be well-structured regarding work tasks, should be able to set and manage work priorities, meet deadlines and work with minimal supervision.

Communications Officer

The Project Assistant and Communications Officer shall also actively pursue the social media engagements of FES-FMCC. This task includes curating for the Twitter and LinkedIn accounts, drafting tweets and posts, communicating with graphic designers for content support, and mapping out strategies to improve the visibility of FES-FMCC.

Main responsibilities and tasks:

  • Preparation and organization of conferences, workshops or other events, including communication and correspondence with participants and service providers;
  • Organizing the workflow at the office and within the FES network around communication; this includes meetings related to social media activities and collaboration with other FES offices on communication matters;
  • Handling of the financial aspects of activities based on the established budget and according to FES financial guidelines;
  • Serving as the point of contact and managing relations with service providers such as transport, hotels, catering, translation, photography, video recording and live streaming agencies;
  • Supporting the process of editing, lay-outing, and printing of publications;  
  • Leading the development and execution of FMCC’s communications strategy; leading communication of FMCC projects and achievements to external and internal stakeholders;
  • Managing communication and PR activities on the FMCC website, social media outlets, print media and other communication tools;
  • Actively pursuing the social media work of the FES-FMCC project; this includes maintaining the Twitter and LinkedIn channel, drafting tweets/posts, communicating with graphic designers for content support, mapping out strategies to improve the social media presence;
  • Support the work of FES-FMCC by building and maintaining its networks with partner organizations and experts across the continent;

Qualifications required:

  • University Bachelors degree in management, project management, event organization, communication or other related fields; 
  • Professional experience of at least 3 years in event management, seminar assistance and other similar roles that are related to the terms of reference outlined above;
  • Fluency in both written as well as oral English and Amharic; knowledge of French is considered an asset;
  • Proven experience in communications – especially on using social media to disseminate policy work;
  • Experience in dealing with a wide range of service providers including hotels, caterers, translation services, graphic designers and other vendors;
  • Experience in working on procurement tasks in accordance with the organizations’ accounting rules.

Social, special and other skills:

  • Strong ability to work within a team;
  • Ability to work independently and responsibly;
  • Very good and professional communication skills both orally and written;
  • Proven experience in event management, procurement and office administration;
  • Networks to and with service providers relevant to the work of FES-FMCC.

 

We offer an interesting area of work, good team spirit, a competitive salary (13 months; based on experience and past work performance), a scheme for health care coverage and transport allowances. We offer a full-time work contract. A probation period of 2 months will apply according to Ethiopian Labor Law. Please note that the employment is on the basis of a local contract with the salary to be paid in Ethiopian Birr.
